Buying childrens clothing can be a challenging task at times and it can seem like there’s no such thing as a sure bet. While they might ‘just’ be going to school, or ‘just’ going to their friends’ house (as opposed to dating or going to job interviews) they still will be very fussy about what they wear – more so than you probably are when you do go to your interviews. At the same time though, this doesn’t mean simply picking out the best possible clothes you can find as in the most stylish or the most expensive – as children have very different tastes when it comes to deciding what looks good and what doesn’t. Seemingly there will bee no rhyme nor reason to your childrens choices in what they wear, and they will probably dress wearing a range of clashing colours and inappropriate outfits no matter how much you try to reason with them.

The question then is – how do you work with this? How do you choose clothes for your children that they will be willing to wear, but that at the same time you won’t feel criminal for letting them walk around in? One great solution, particularly for boys clothing is to use character clothes. These mean for example t-shirts or hats with their favourite characters printed on them – whether these be from video games, from books, from comics or from films. For example a highly popular piece of boys clothing is to wear Spiderman t-shirts, with him either swinging from a web, striking a dramatic pose, or leaping across a building. This works for most young boys because Spider-man is almost unanimously cool. Children at this age won’t really be interested in looking good or in matching their colours, but you can rest assured that a lot of them will really appreciate comics or at least the TV show. Not only that, but they’re likely to be ecstatic about it, and to become fanatical, insisting that you watch the same episode over and over again – this is after all the nature of children. Other popular characters are Optimus Prime, Superman, Batman, Iron Man, Bugs Bunny, Ben 10, Sonic the Hedgehog, Master Chief and anything else along these lines. By getting them their favourite character on their clothing you can be almost guaranteed that they will love the clothes (simple thing…) and this means fewer arguments and tantrums. If you’re really lucky it might also mean that they try a bit harder to look after the clothes slightly.

For girls clothing spider-man probably won’t cut it – or at least it won’t for most girls (the odd ‘tom boy’ might still enjoy this though it will be hard to come by). Instead then, look for things like Barbie or My Little Pony to adorn your girls clothing for something of a similar effect. Bear in mind however with girls that they are slightly less obsessive than boys so this is unlikely to work quite to the same degree. At the same time they are also more into fashion from a young age and more likely to mature quickly.
